I found this in my developmental psychology textbook.
Seeing studies like this always make me want to scream at the people who say that men are naturally superior in science and mathematics and women are simply naturally oriented toward literature and history. Imagine if girls were just raised like boys and given the opportunities to be successful or encouraged to pursue STEM education. How much “smarter” would women be if we began the race at the starting line instead of 100 feet behind?
It’s that time of year again, so read up and be prepared - the symptoms of a snakebite, what to do, and most importantly what not to do.
As someone who sees my fair share of animal victims of venomous snake bites, I just want to add a few things here:
First, all snake bites need immediate medical attention. The only way to treat envenomation is with antivenin. The sooner you can get to a vet, the better the prognosis.
The article mentions that, if a veterinarian is not available, pain medication and antibiotics can be given. DO NOT DO THIS. Snake bites are incredibly painful, and no home remedy will be effective as pain relief (we usually use morphine or hydromorphone in these cases). Also, medication you give may limit the choices available to your vet later on due to the potential for reaction. With the time you spend finding and administering pain medication, you could be driving to your closest veterinary hospital.
Second, please call if you are on your way with an animal who has been bitten by a snake to make sure the hospital is equipped to handle it. Some smaller clinics don’t carry antivenin because it is crazy expensive to keep on hand and if it isn’t used before it expires those clinics eat that cost. Your best bet is probably an emergency or referral center.
Finally, please don’t waste too much time trying to definitively identify the snake. In the US there are two types of antivenin, one for crotalids and one for coral snakes. It doesn’t matter what species of rattlesnake or if it’s a copperhead or a cotton mouth. They’re getting the same treatment. Please don’t try to kill the snake to bring it with you so the vet can look, because you’re risking your own health to do so. And definitely don’t catch the snake and bring it in alive, because then you’re risking MY health (you would think this was common sense, but oh boy, do I have stories!).
Keep safe out there!
Also important to note: dogs and children can be taught to avoid snakes. Your odds of getting bitten spike dramatically if you try to capture or harm the snake. They strike in self defense.
wow wow wow wow!! This is so great. Only just started glancing through and found one of American Posters in the 1890s (art nouveau posters! my favorite).
I love The Met. I love that you can get in on a self-determined donation, so it’s always accessible. And now there’s this! So even if you don’t live in the city, you’re there.
You sure have seenthis post. It has spread like wildfire over the past few days so I doubt there is any artist out there who hasn’t seen it. But even if you didn’t, you should read on because I’m about to tell you a handy little thing that can help you to protect your art from such assholes as the anon who submitted this bullcrap, as well as art thieves in general.
The magic word is Metadata.
Metadata is like an invisible signature that is embeded into a file. It can contain all kinds of information, like Title, date, keywords for online seach engines, and copyright information. And the best thing is, since this information is “hidden” in the code of your picture, it’s hard to remove it.
There is a nice basic tutorial on how to add Metadata, or “additional file information” to your images in photoshop. It’s really, really easy so check it out!
I’m not sure if you can do the same with any other art program. If you know how to do this in other programs / can confirm that it works the same way there, please tell me so I can add the information to this post.
Adding the Metadata will not stop idiots from taking and reposting your art. It also won’t make them stop editing out your signature. It WILL however, help you prove that you are the original artist whenever you have to. Always remember my friends. You, the artist, are protected by law. No one has the right to take your intellectual property and hard work and repost, use or edit it without your permission. Ever.
